What skin type am I?
This is a question I get asked daily.
It is easy to analyse and access the skin under a mag lamp in the studio and offer advice on the best products and treatments to suit your skin needs.
However, diagnosing yourself at home is a little trickier, you may think you are one type but you could be a completely different type or even a combination!
Below is a list of common skin types for you to find the one that fits you. :)
Normal Skin
- Few or no blemishes
- No severe sensitivity
- Pores are very fine, hardly visible
- Skin tone is even, clear, and smooth
- Skin is neither too oily or too dry
For normal skin types it’s best to do maintenance and preventative care to keep that lovely glow.
Normal skin can also fluctuate making it a little more oily or dry at times usually with seasonal changes.
Dry Skin
- Small pores
- Sometimes flaking skin
- Dull or rough skin
- Tight feeling
- Less elasticity
- More visible lines
Dry skin is lacking in oil, leaving the skin susceptible to environmental damage and premature ageing.
Here are some things you can do to help.
Use mild soaps on the body and gentle face cleansers or balms.
Eat more good healthy fats and if you cant get them in your diet take an Omega supplement.
Look for Serums with Hyaluronic acid, this magic molecule binds and holds water in the skin locking in hydration.
Oily Skin
Oily Skin essentially means that your face makes a little too much in the oil department. This can lead to:
- Larger pores
- Shiny complexion
- Blackheads
- Can get blemishes
- Thicker looking skin
- Lines / Wrinkles look less prominent
The goal here is finding products to balance everything out. While oily skin does require more cleansing and exfoliation, be careful about using products that strip the skin and cause irritation.
Oily skin tends to age slower than other skin types because of the protection provided by the natural oils.
Sensitive Skin
Sensitive Skin is a skin condition instead of a skin type.
Which means that it is not necessarily caused by genetics, though it’s still important to know about. I see lots of new clients with compromised skin barriers like sensitised skin.
It can become this way from overuse of skincare and using the products not suited to your skin, medications and hormonal changes.
Sensitive skin can be identified as:
- Thin skin
- Reacts easily
- Redness
- Fragile
- Can become dry
- Easily flushed/ irritated Rosacea
Because it is a condition, anyone can become sensitised from colder weather, heat, or harsh chemicals and products. Sensitive skin must be treated very gently, the goal being to soothe and calm the skin.
Looking for products to build the skin back up is key. We love DMK Skincare to treat skin conditions like this. It can be best treated after a consultation at The Skin Studios.
Combination Skin
Combination Skin is very common and essentially means that your face has a mixture of some or all of the skin types.
Usually the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) tends to be oilier and the outer rims of the face are normal to dry. This is due to the number of sebaceous glands in those areas.
Combination skin can have:
- Larger pores in some spots
- Blackheads
- Shiny T-zone
- Normal pores
- Flaky dryness
It is important to avoid harsh products or exfoliation as well as excessive cleansing of the skin. Combination skin can have different problems in various areas of the face, it can be more tricky to treat than than other skin types.
The best place to start is using a Cleanser that will clear pores, keep skin hydrated and not over strip the skin barrier.
We love DMK Deep Pore Cleanser.
All skin types need something different to achieve healthy, vibrant skin. The better informed you are, the better you can help your skin.
